Natural Family Planning (NFP)

Our marriage has been greatly enriched through following the Catholic Church's teachings and using Natural Family Planning.  We have been very blessed, so I want to share our story of why we stopped using contraception!

Here are a list of resources that you can use to get more information about Natural Family Planning:

Websites:
  • I Use NFP  This is the best place to look for general information about NFP.  You can learn about the different types, find the answers to frequently asked questions, read real life stories from other women, and learn more about why
  • 1 Flesh  This is a website developed by college students who promote the idea of marriage without contraception.  There are a lot of good articles with information about the risks of taking birth control, as well as real life stories from other women.

Books:
  • Taking Charge of Your Fertility: If you want a secular book that doesn't look at the religious aspects, I highly recommend this one.  I can't advocate it from a Catholic standpoint because it talks about the FAM method where you use barrier methods during periods of abstinence.  However, there is very comprehensive information about women's cycles and reproductive health.
  • Adam and Eve After the Pill: Paradoxes of the Sexual Revolution  by Mary Eberstadt - This is SO good.  A very, very fascinating read about how the introduction of contraception has had a devastating impact on our society, in terms of divorce, pornography, etc.  It gave me chills and fired me up against the use of birth control.
  • Theology of the Body for Beginners by Christopher West - This book gives a beginning understanding of the Catholic Church's teachings on sexuality.  It is based off of the Pope John Paul II's 129 lectures during the 70s and 80s.
  • Holy Sex by Dr. Gregory Popcak - This is a great book that discusses the Catholic view of sex and breaks down a lot of the false beliefs people have about what is acceptable in a marriage.
  • Good News About Sex and Marriage: Answers to Your Honest Questions About Catholic Teaching  by Christopher West - This is the only book on here that I have not read, but I have heard so many good things about it, and I am planning on reading it soon!

  1. Thanks for posting these! I have yet to master NFP...we have 5 months left til the wedding so I'm trying the best I can to be well-prepared. I have read both of the above-mentioned Christopher West books. I have also read John Paul II's Love and Responsibility, which was actually the very first book I read on the Catholic meaning of love and sex. The book was not the easiest read b/c we all know JPII was quite the intellectual, but I finished it and it opened the door for me to keep seeking more. And a book that I am currently reading, my 3rd book by Christ West, is Heaven's Song. And this one is actually based on several of JPII's talks that have been unpublished and hidden at the Vatican for years...talks he wrote but never gave. So far, the book is just beautiful, it gives an even more deeper insight into the beauty of a TRUE CATHOLIC MARRIAGE and sex as it was meant to be. I still need to find a good book or resource that specifically teaches me the METHOD of NFP. Unfortunately, we are unable to take a class with an NFP instructor as we work the opposite schedules right now, SO I am kind of on my own and looking for a good resource that can effectively teach me charting, signs of fertility, etc etc. Right now I am trying to get through a free online NFP manual that I have found on NFPANDMORE.ORG. Perhaps you can list that website here for anyone looking for a free downloadable NFP Manual and charts. It is written by a Catholic couple and so far I really like it. It is a bit confusing and difficult for me to learn the charting but I am trying really hard...I hope it gets a bit easier the more I study it. God Bless Caitlin!
