Our New Pope!

I was signed up for the Pope Alert, and I freaked out when I checked my phone at a stoplight this morning to see a text that there was white smoke!  I did not expect them to come to a decision today, and I couldn't wait to get home.  As soon as I got back, I eagerly turned on EWTN to watch the live coverage (what a blessing to be on Spring Break this week to be able to witness this event!).  To be honest, I was really, really surprised to hear the name Jorge Mario Bergoglio.  I was expecting to hear one of the names of the more well known cardinals.

He looked so nervous at first, and I wasn't really sure what to think.  I wouldn't say I was really emotional when I first found out, but then I started reading all that I could find about him, and I became more and more excited!  Pope Francis is a humble, loving servant, demonstrated in the way he has lived his life.

He lives in an apartment heated by a strove rather than the palace, cooks his own meals, and chooses to take the bus rather than the limo.

He is dedicated to helping the poor.

He stands up for the Catholic faith even though he is rebuked by the government for it.

He cares for AIDs patients.  I was just blown away by this incredible image.  Him washing and kissing the feet of an AIDs patient.  Isn't that such a beautiful example of God's love?

Thomas and I went to a talk at our church tonight, and at the end our priest talked a little bit about his excitement over Pope Francis.  He said that the Holy Spirit is full of surprises, and God has picked Pope Francis to guide us, and especially to show us how to lead more humble, simple lives.  I couldn't agree more, and I am so thrilled we have this holy man to guide us in our walk of faith!  This is such an exciting time, and I feel so grateful to be Catholic!

May God bless Pope Francis abundantly and give him the strength he needs to do God's will!

  3. That is a beautiful picture! I was the same way, super excited and surprised to get the text that we had a pope, hadn't heard of him, but more and more excited the more I learn. You are so lucky you got to watch the coverage. I had to keep seeing my patients, and they were much more concerned with their aches and pains and seemed to want me to pay attention to their pains instead of papal news as well!

  4. Even though I'm not Catholic, I still couldn't help but be glued to the TV (well YouTube) today after they announced that there had been white smoke. It was an exciting day! And I agree with you - after reading about him and the humble life that he leads I was excited for the Catholic Church. I think that he's going to be an inspiration to everyone, even those of us who aren't Catholic.

  5. He is such an incredible selection. I'm so, so excited! He has an adorable smile and from his speeches on the balcony I thought he seemed so humble, genuine and a little nervous. I am excited for the Church. He is going to inspire so many! I'm a little sad the conclave is over though, haha. It's so historic, amazing and dramatic with all the anticipation & mystery.
